Why does raiden turn into some evil vicious cyborg killing machine in MGS 4?

My guess is that an accident occured causing Raiden to turn into a cyborg, which is cool. Did you see the fight between Vamp and Raiden, freakin crazy, it was a little though when he grabbed his you know what lol.
