What is up with my cat?

It is running around like a madman outside, jumping and wailing at nothing like it's having a hallucination. It keeps doing this between breaks of coming inside and being completely normal for a few minutes. Then it runs outside and goes mental again, running around on the spot and jumping and arching its back. It has never done this before. What is it doing?
