Hasn' t the profit motive ruined mainstream media?

I listen to NPR for news. Contrary to popular belief, it's not liberally biased and probably the closest thing to real news out there. And of course, it's largely publicly funded. Hasn't the profit motive forced mainstream media sources to rely heavily on irresponsible op-ed in order to gather ratings, so that ultimately, a sobbing man scribbling acronyms on a markerboard is taken seriously?
